Tiwa Savage is such a big star she needs no introduction. Born Tiwatope Savage, She’s unarguably one of the biggest female musicians from Nigeria at the moment. Releasing hits after hits, Tiwa has won the hearts of many people in Nigeria and beyond. With a huge following, she sells out shows like high-in-demand goods. But once upon a time, nobody knew the name Tiwa Savage. Like a hurricane, she caused a commotion and dominated the industry. How did it happen?
Born on 5 February 1980 in Lagos State Nigeria where she hails from, her family moved to the UK when she was 11 years old. Developing interest in music at an early age, she was a trombone player for her high school’s orchestra band. Shortly after, her parents relocated from the UK to the US. At the age of 16, she did backup vocals for Singers like George Michael, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson, Blu Cantrell. Chaka Khan, Ms. Dynamite and Andrea Bocelli.
In 2006, the soft spoken Singer participated in The X Factor UK. Unfortunately, she didn’t go beyond the final 24. In 2009, Tiwa signed a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and she wrote songs for the likes of Kat Deluna, Babyface, Fantasia Barrino, Monica and Mya.
While she was making steady progress in the abroad, she realized that there was an opportunity for her back home in Nigeria. After much consultation with family and friends, she decided to take the huge step. In 2010, she started recording her debut album “Once Upon a Time” under her own label imprint 323 Entertainment which she co-owned with her then manager and now husband Tunji Balogun.
